Jigsaw Jaws is an original work in gold leaf on paper, 22 × 28 × 1.5 inches.
The open mouth fills the upper field head-on, jaw hinge at the widest point of the composition, teeth rendered with a precision that reads less like threat than like engineering. The body tapers below into the black ground, pectoral fins spreading just enough to anchor the form without softening it.
A great white viewed from below, from inside the moment before, is one of the few images that bypasses interpretation and lands directly in the body. Gold changes what that means. Gold is the material of the sacred, the treasured, the commemorated. Applied here with the care a naturalist gives a specimen worth preserving, it refuses to let the shark be merely terrifying. It insists the animal is also worthy, also ancient, also something that deserves full attention rather than a flinch.
