To the upper right, a cooler mass of blue-grey marks anchors the scene in a particular atmosphere: low-lit, interior, lived-in.
The mark-making that constructs the figure is the same mark-making that surrounds it. Presence and ground are made of the same substance. What separates the figure from the dark is not line but accumulation , the way attention, held long enough in one place, becomes form.
