Elle Gance is an original work in gold leaf on paper, 18 × 24 × 1.5 inches.
The figure is built entirely from calligraphic script running along the contour. The body has no interior , only a boundary made of language. Where the form curves at the hip and knee, the marks cluster and press closer together, as if the text itself feels the weight of what it traces.
The silhouette exists only where the writing runs. Remove the script and there is no figure, only black ground. The act of inscription and the act of depicting are not two things but one: the body is called into being by the marks that describe its edge. Whether the script is honoring the form or constructing it remains an open question , and the right one.
Grace, the title implies, is not inherent. It is written into existence.
