Carbon Crown is an original work in gold leaf on paper, 18 × 24 × 1.5 inches.
The hair rises from the figure's profile as a field of raised, fragmented rectangular forms, each one dark-surfaced and gold-edged, so the crown is not drawn but built outward into space, a three-dimensional structure pressing against the flatness of the black ground. Below it, the face and neck are composed entirely of dense cursive marks in gold, form emerging not from line but from the accumulated weight of language laid against itself.
Two different grammars of construction occupy the same portrait. The body is written into being through script, patient and intimate. The hair is built from matter, physical and architectural. The title fuses two readings at once: crown as elevation, carbon as the element of all organic life, the pressure that turns substance into something that endures.
