Anabasis is an original work in 18k gold on paper, 16 × 20 × 1 inches.
A cluster of figures surges upward through the center-right of the field, arms raised and reaching, the gold built up with enough texture that the forms seem to press outward from the black ground rather than sit on it. Around this central mass, isolated limbs and partial figures scatter and dissolve, trailing off into the dark as if momentum and dissolution are happening simultaneously. A partial border of dense calligraphic marks anchors the upper left, leaving the lower right open and uncontained.
Anabasis is the Greek word for ascent , a march upward with no guarantee of return. These figures are mid-movement, but fragmentation runs alongside the upward thrust: the gold that makes them visible is also the gold that shows them coming apart. Collective effort and individual dissolution occupy the same instant.
