First Palette is an original work in gold leaf on paper, 16 × 20 × 1 inches.
A child crouches at the center of the composition, holding a palette, the figure flanked on both sides by tall-stemmed wildflowers whose thin, spidery lines reach upward into the black ground. The child looks downward, the posture one of concentration rather than performance.
The palette is not yet loaded. The first one never is. What the work holds is the moment just before making begins , the child already in possession of the instrument but not yet of the knowledge. Which means the gold surrounding this figure is not achievement. It is potential: the material of value given to a moment that has not yet earned anything, and is more precious for it.
