I created this work by applying 18k gold leaf to paper. The piece measures 16 × 20 × 1 inches, and the gold leaf surface responds to light in the space where it's viewed. The viewer encounters a reflective surface that shifts as they move around the work or as lighting conditions change. The gold leaf creates variations in luminosity across the paper ground, with some areas holding light while others absorb it. This is what the viewer sees when they approach the piece—a surface that appears to breathe with the light in the room.
