Auruscript is Victor Selin’s invented nonlexical script. It is not readable language. It functions as structure, texture, field, and visual pressure inside gold-leaf works on black. The marks emerged through sustained daily practice and systematic refinement. They carry no linguistic meaning. Their arrangement carries everything else.

Development

Auruscript developed from an exploration of what remains when the act of making marks is separated from the task of communication. Through repetition, a vocabulary of forms emerged, each shape carrying the weight of intention without the burden of meaning. The system remains open and evolving. There is no fixed alphabet.

Materials and Method

Marks are built through controlled gilding processes. Surface preparation, size application, timing, and material behavior determine the final form. The black ground is prepared to absorb light completely. The gold is applied where the image demands it, not where decoration would place it.

About the Work

What does Auruscript mean?

The name combines “aurum” (Latin for gold) with “script” (writing). It describes both the material and the form: writing in gold. The script itself carries no linguistic meaning — it exists purely as visual form.

Is each character unique?

While certain recurring forms appear throughout the body of work, each character is drawn by hand and varies subtly. The vocabulary of forms has evolved over time, with new characters emerging and others being refined. There is no fixed alphabet — the system remains open and evolving.

Why nonlexical script?

By removing semantic meaning, the work invites a different kind of attention. Viewers are freed from the task of reading and can instead experience the visual rhythm, the material quality of the gold, and the meditative presence of the marks. The script suggests meaning without delivering it.
